Southwark Rugby Academy
Southwark Rugby Academy is looking to develop players capable of making the grade in adult and professional rugby by educating local players with Southwark Rugby training methods and developing a natural transition between youth and senior rugby.
The Academy
The Academy is designed to expose young adults to high-quality rugby, educating them on four crucial aspects of the game:
· Technical, Tactical, Physical and Psychological
Players will also receive off-field support:
· Injury prevention
· Mentoring
· Nutritional guidelines
The aim of the Academy is to further develop the players’ life and rugby skills, while also beginning to develop their tactical understanding.
The initiative is looking to develop players capable of making the grade in adult and professional rugby by educating local players with Southwark Rugby training methods.
The Southwark Rugby Academy is the final step in the transition from youth to senior level competition.
Rugby Programme
Southwark Rugby training methods develop the Southwark Rugby philosophy:
• Every player fully committing both in attack and defence
• Players comfortable and confident in playing multi phase rugby
• We play at pace
• Every player committed in developing an aggressive and dominant defensive style
Strength and Conditioning
Players have the opportunity to work on three main areas: improving their performance, preventing the injuries and reinforcing their general health.
Focusing on quality movements with and without the ball - speed, strength and power - they’ll have a chance to work on the effectiveness of their game.
Developing also correct techniques will be beneficial in order to prevent potential injuries.
Monthly rugby clinics
Coaches deliver a monthly rugby clinic in order to improve and develop specific rugby skills and techniques.
Mentoring sessions– focus on mental well-being
Focus on mental health and psychological or emotional health and wellbeing.
Players should be free to talk about what they think, feel and behave.
Coaches will encourage them to speak openly about school, sport aspiration, and choices to make in their sport career.
Coaching method
The coaches’ philosophy is based on a holistic player-centred approach; every player will receive a tailored support based on their needs and potential.
Through rugby trainings and 1-1 sessions, coaches will gain a full understanding of the player needs and wishes, adapting their intervention accordingly and supporting them in achieving their full potential.
Players will be encouraged to express themselves evolving their life and rugby skills.

Players and coaches will have the opportunity analyse and work on more details coaching points. Players will be constantly and appropriately challenged in order for
them to express their full potential.
Qualifications – CPD
If interested in a potential sport or coaching career, the players will have the opportunity to take part to various CPD (Continuing Professional Development) courses organised and delivered by England Rugby.
Who can access to the Academy? Trial and assessments
Players come into the Southwark Rugby Academy through the Development Player Programme – All Stars Southwark but they can also submit their name if they have played rugby already or feel that they have the potential to play competitive rugby. Players can also be scouted by the Academy staff.
Trials and trainings take place every Wednesday afternoon in Burgess Park (SE5 0JB) at 4pm.
Scouting and assessing will continue throughout the season.
